For those of you who don’t know, I went around the world on a boat over a period of ten years. (I spent 7-8 months on the boat and the winter in places that had hosted a Winter Olympics so I could ski the cross-country courses.)
By random coincidence, I ran into a U.K. friend I knew from those days. He invited us onto his yacht for afternoon champagne and a short motor along the coastline. (He asked that we not take photos.) Rather fun to live the high life, if only for a few hours. (I knew it was the high life because he served us sandwiches with the crusts cut off. 🙂 )
When we returned to the slip, we saw two boys struggling to put their boat into the harbor. Husband stopped to lend them a hand. They proudly told him they’d made the boat themselves and it had “gone all last summer without once sinking.” As fine an endorsement as a boat can get, no?
When they got it in the water I noticed its name. One of the boys caught me looking.
“Very good name, yes?” he said. “Just like the boat in the movie!”
“Hope you have another season without sinking,” was all I could manage without bursting into laughter.
