You can buy lifejackets at the marine supplier … and the fruit seller … and the shoe store …

Everywhere you go in the marketplace you see bright orange; the marine supplier, the fruit seller, the shoe store. Why? Because everyone now sells lifejackets. Racks crowded with the garish squares of neon are put out for sale every morning, with the same racks emptied only hours later.

The buyers? Syrian refugees, of course. Those who can afford it are also purchasing inflatable boats with outboard motors.

We saw one family—a dad, a mom, two boys and a girl—trudging along the waterfront. Each carried a duffle bag and had a lifejacket tucked under an arm. Heart-wrenching to put a human face to the tragic situation that up until now I’ve only read about in the press.
