February 21, 2016 I’ve got a writer’s imagination. Who else surreptitiously rubs lamps in Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar? ? Off-the-top-of-your-head answer time: If a genie did appear, what would you wish for? The genie promptly rids the earth of people. He has to use his second wish to undo his first. He uses his third wish to free the genie. In an episode of The Twilight Zone, a man asks the genie for money, generously gives much of it away, but then gets fined by the IRS. He then wishes to lead a powerful country and is turned into Hitler. He uses his final wish to have his old life back. The moral of both stories is, of course, to be careful what you wish for and consider the ramifications. However, money can change lives for the better if used wisely, so although it may seem shallow, I would wish to win a big lottery. Taxes are immediately deducted so that takes care of the IRS, then you secure the principal and live off (and give from and pay taxes on) the interest. In my state, winners can remain anonymous, so I wouldn’t have to tell anyone. I’m not completely altruistic so I would ensure my own financial stability for life, thereby relieving myself of a lot of stress which is surely slowly killing me, but I could also do a lot of good. From charities and causes I would like to support to a friend whose child is transgender, which is costly, I could and would make some lives, including my own, better.
