The jams were made from two local fruits I’d never tasted before, the butter was unusually creamy and sweet, the juice was a combination of pineapple and another local fruit reminiscent of tomato, and the bread had chunks of local nuts in it.

If I lived in South America, I would become a fruit snob. Everything I’ve tried here has been fresh, ripe, and wonderfully sweet. Even the Red Delicious apples taste as though they are heirloom variety.
